I took up surfing TODAY!!!!!
Sometimes in life you just gotta jump right in and go for it. While on vacation in Costa Rica I quickly learned Jaco beach, Costa Rica is a great place for surfing. I’ve never surfed. Late in life I learned to swim. I’m not a strong swimmer but I know my limits. Well right outside my condo there’s a “surf camp” station. I knew right away, I’m surfing on this trip!
Sunday afternoon, after church I was ready!!! I took the nice short walk to the surf camp tent but guess what, I didn’t see any of the instructors. I saw a guy taking pictures and another hanging out. I said hello, the guys nodded back but it was obvious they were not taking me out. So, I walked away and enjoyed the beach. While out there I noticed a few guys wearing certain shirts and they were working with individuals on surfboards. Aha, they must be instructors!! As soon as I saw them go towards the surf camp. I was on it!
I got my Instructor!!! Jason, He was a very nice, quiet spoken guy. He obviously was not from Costa Rica but found the area perfect for taking up residence. Jason was very patient with me. He taught me that in surfing where your eyes go, you go. So, keep your eyes up and you will stay up. The surfing experience taught me that when I stop being afraid I can do anything.
The first dozen times on the board, I was awful. I couldn’t get from lying flat on my stomach to on my feet all in one swoop. I kept trying to get on my knee, then my feet. It doesn’t work that way. I needed to go straight from my stomach to my feet all in one swoop. I was trying to get on my knee, then my feet because I’m trying to do slow and steady instead swift and quick… I’m scared!
Before long I was popping up from my stomach to my feet and riding the waves. I was so excited. I smiled from ear to ear. I can see the other surfer instructors clapping & cheering “she finally did it”, I’m sure that was their thoughts. My friends were clapping & cheering, I see people pointing and cheering for me. It was a great feeling. Everyone on the beach saw me fall multiple times and now they see me riding waves. Riding the waves of the Pacific Ocean in Jaco Beach, Costa Rica!
For someone who can barely swim but had a desire to surf. I totally went for it. Sometimes in business and life you have to just go for it full speed ahead. You may fall a few dozen times but you only fail if you stay down. Get back up and keep trying you will soon learn from your mistakes and ride the waves of life in no time. Remember Jason’s words “where your eyes go, you go, so keep your eyes up and you will stay up”.
I’m ready for day 2 of my new hobby!!!!!
